Skarø Is invests in solar energy with support from the EENergy program
With the expansion of the company’s solar power plant, Skarø Is (Skaroe Ice Cream) expects to reduce energy costs and climate footprint across the seasons.
For several years, Skarø Is has focused on sustainability and energy efficiency to reduce the company’s environmental footprint. However, the company faces a constant challenge: the production of ice cream is energy-intensive, especially during the summer months when the demand is high.
To reduce the dependency on external energy sources and strengthen the green transition, Skarø Is applied for support through the EENergy program, assisted by Rubin Dollerup Nielsen, Enterprise Europe Network Sustainability Advisor at Food & Bio Cluster Denmark.

With funding from the EENergy program, the company is now investing in an expansion of their solar power plant. This initiative builds on the company’s existing sustainability strategy, where they have already implemented several energy-efficiency measures. Through previous collaboration with Business Hub Funen, Skarø Is has received guidance on how to optimize their energy consumption and minimize CO₂ emissions. The new investment in solar cells enables the company to cover a larger part of their energy needs with renewable energy, reducing both costs and carbon footprint.
The EENergy program has granted €10,000 to the project, which has been crucial to realize the solar expansion.
“For us, it is not just a question of economics, but of responsibility. We want to run a business that harmonizes with the nature around us, and this support enables us to take another step towards a greener future”, says Martin Jørgensen, owner of Skarø Is.
The new investment will enable Skarø Is to achieve significant energy savings, which in percentage terms are greatest in winter, when overall energy consumption is lower. In January 2025, the savings amounted to approximately 20%, showing the potential of utilizing solar energy all year round. Even though the energy demand is highest in the summertime, solar cells help reduce costs and carbon footprint across the seasons.
With the ambition to eventually become 100% energy self-sufficient, this is another step in Skarø Is’ green journey – proof that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, even in a small but ambitious food company.
